The Institution of Civil Engineer’s Royal Charter defines Civil Engineering as:

“….being the art of directing the great sources of power in Nature for the use and convenience of man…”

and The Institution of Civil Engineer’s describes Civil Engineering as:

“A professional engineering disciple that deals with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment.”

Thus, Civil Engineers and Civil Engineering Surveyors are concerned with the physical and built environment and the control and direction of the forces of nature for our civilisations.

Civil Engineering is thus, a broad engineering discipline that encompasses:-

• Marine
• Pipelines

• Transportation
• Sewerage and Waste Water Management
• Tunnels
• Waste
